Sweet Potato Burgers🍔

Not Your Average Weeknight Dinner

I made this Sweet Potato Burger on a whim one evening when I was craving something that felt like a proper meal, not just another quick dinner thrown together — and it ended up becoming one of those recipes I keep coming back to. There’s something about roasting the sweet potato buns low and slow that fills the whole kitchen with this warm, caramelized smell, while the patty sizzles away and the sauce comes together in two minutes flat.

It’s not a complicated recipe by any means, but it has that feeling of being made with intention — the kind of dinner you’d actually want to sit down and enjoy, not just eat standing up at the counter. Between the prep, the grilling, and the assembling, it comes together in under 50 minutes, and honestly, most of that time is just waiting on the oven while you get everything else ready.

The Secret to My Perfect Burger Sauce

Every good burger lives or dies by its sauce, and mine comes down to one thing: very finely diced pickled cucumber. Not roughly chopped — properly minced, almost like a relish. That’s what gives the sauce that little pop of tang in every bite instead of one big pickle taste all at once.

Combined with the sweetness of ketchup and BBQ sauce, the sharpness of grainy mustard, and a splash of pickle juice for brightness, it’s the kind of sauce you’ll want to put on literally everything else in your fridge too.

A Naturally Gluten-Free, High-Protein Dinner

Between the burger patty, the melty cheese, and the Greek yogurt in the sauce, this is a naturally high-protein dinner without trying too hard — no protein powder, no “fitness hack” gimmicks, just real ingredients doing the work. And since there’s no bun, it’s gluten-free by default too, which means it fits into pretty much any way you’re eating right now without you having to think twice about it.

It’s also the kind of meal that feels indulgent without actually being one — melted cheese, a creamy, tangy sauce, a proper sear on the patty — but because the “bun” is a caramelized sweet potato instead of white bread, you’re getting fiber and nutrients where you’d normally just get empty carbs. Great option if you’re craving a “cheat day” meal that isn’t actually cheating that much, and honestly? You might end up liking this version more than the original. I for sure did.

Weeknight-Easy, Weekend-Worthy

This burger is honestly my go-to when I want something that feels a little special but doesn’t take forever to make. Between roasting the sweet potato and grilling the patty, it comes together in under 50 minutes, and most of that is hands-off time while the oven does its thing. It’s the kind of recipe that looks way more impressive than the effort it actually takes — perfect for a weekend dinner when you want to eat something good without spending your whole evening in the kitchen.

Why Sweet Potato Instead of a Bun

Swapping a regular bun for caramelized roasted sweet potato “buns” isn’t just a gluten-free hack — it genuinely changes the whole burger. Sweet potato brings natural sweetness from caramelizing in the oven, that balances the smoky, savory patty, plus a soft-but-sturdy texture that holds up to all that sauce without falling apart.

It’s also a sneaky way to add fiber and vitamin A to a meal that would otherwise be pretty carb-heavy from bread alone — so you get a burger that actually keeps you full, not just satisfied for twenty minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the sweet potato buns ahead of time?

Yes — roast them earlier in the day and just reheat in the oven for a few minutes before assembling, so they stay crisp instead of going soft.

Can I use turkey or chicken patties instead of beef?

Definitely, just keep an eye on cook time since leaner meat cooks faster and dries out more easily.

What can I use instead of Greek yogurt in the sauce?

Mayo works as a 1:1 swap if that’s what you have — the recipe actually gives you the option of either.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes, just skip the cheese slices or use a dairy-free alternative. And be sure to use mayo instead of Greek yogurt — everything else in the recipe is naturally dairy-free already.

Grill vs. Pan — Does It Matter?

I used a coal grill for mine, but this recipe works exactly the same on a regular pan or electric grill. What matters more is not moving the patties around too much while they cook, so you get that proper sear on both sides before flipping.

What’s the best way to reheat leftovers?

Reheat the patty and sweet potato separately in a pan or oven until warmed through, then reassemble fresh with new sauce and veggies — microwaving the whole assembled burger can make the sweet potato and veggies go a bit mushy.

INGREDIENTS ARE RIGHT ABOVE THE IMAGE 😉

Method

  1. Prep the grill (if using): If you're using a coal grill like me, get it ready now. If using an electric grill or pan, you can skip this step.
  2. The sweet potato buns: Preheat oven to 200°C. Cut the sweet potato into circles, approx. 1.5cm/1 inch thick.
Place onto a lined baking tray, drizzle with olive oil on both sides, and season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic, and onion powder on both sides. Bake for 20 minutes, flip, and bake another 20 minutes.
  3. Prep your veggies: While the sweet potato bakes, slice the red onion into big rounds (1–1.5cm/1 inch thick), slice the tomato into big rounds, and cut the pickled cucumber however you like (I do mine lengthwise, then in half).
  4. Make the sauce: Combine all sauce ingredients, making sure to dice the pickled cucumber really finely — that's the secret to the perfect sauce.
  5. Season the patties: Drizzle the patties with a little olive oil and season on both sides with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic.
  6. Grill: Cook the patties and onion on both sides — 5-6 minutes per side, on a pan, grill, or wherever you like to cook. Add the cheese slices onto the patties in the last minute so they melt.
  7. Assemble: Sweet potato round on the bottom, as much sauce as you like, tomato, lettuce, pickled cucumber, patty, grilled onion, and more sauce on top if you want. Close with another sweet potato round and enjoy 😉
