A juicy burger patty with melty cheese and tangy homemade sauce, stacked between caramelized roasted sweet potato buns instead of buns. High-protein, gluten-free, and made with simple ingredients 😉

Method

  1. Prep the grill (if using): If you're using a coal grill like me, get it ready now. If using an electric grill or pan, you can skip this step.
  2. The sweet potato buns: Preheat oven to 200°C. Cut the sweet potato into circles, approx. 1.5cm/1 inch thick.
Place onto a lined baking tray, drizzle with olive oil on both sides, and season with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic, and onion powder on both sides. Bake for 20 minutes, flip, and bake another 20 minutes.
  3. Prep your veggies: While the sweet potato bakes, slice the red onion into big rounds (1–1.5cm/1 inch thick), slice the tomato into big rounds, and cut the pickled cucumber however you like (I do mine lengthwise, then in half).
  4. Make the sauce: Combine all sauce ingredients, making sure to dice the pickled cucumber really finely — that's the secret to the perfect sauce.
  5. Season the patties: Drizzle the patties with a little olive oil and season on both sides with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic.
  6. Grill: Cook the patties and onion on both sides — 5-6 minutes per side, on a pan, grill, or wherever you like to cook. Add the cheese slices onto the patties in the last minute so they melt.
  7. Assemble: Sweet potato round on the bottom, as much sauce as you like, tomato, lettuce, pickled cucumber, patty, grilled onion, and more sauce on top if you want. Close with another sweet potato round and enjoy 😉
